Child ProtectionUnion calls for needs-based funding06 January 2004The Queensland Public Sector Union (QPSU), the union for child protection has demanded that all political parties agree to a "needs-based funding model" for child protection services following the release of the Crime and Misconduct Commission's (CMC) report into abuse of children in foster care. Alex Scott, QPSU general secretary, has welcomed the report: "The CMC has vindicated what frontline child protection workers have been saying for years, that the department is in crisis and that the child protection system has failed Queensland children. This report itemises what needs to be done to fix the system and keep our kids safe. It says that the current model of resource based funding will never ensure children are protected". QPSU members congratulate the CMC for their commonsense proposals to fix the system. Alex Scott has written to the Premier and to the Leader of the Opposition asking for a meeting and is urging a bipartisan approach to make sure that the needs of Queensland's children are put ahead of politics.
