NSW DOCS fined over staff assaults
12 December 2002
The NSW Department of Community Services (DOCS) was today fined $285,000 for offences under the OHS Act 1983, following assaults on Disability Services Staff.
The PSA of NSW (our NSW CPSU-SPSF Branch) is largely responsible for NSW WorkCover commencing a prosecution against DOCS. The Union told WorkCover that if WorkCover were not prepared to prosecute (there was some reluctance at the time to pursue a prosecution), that the PSA, the Union, would prosecute and subpoena WorkCover inspectors to give evidence in the matter.
This is the second time DOCS has been Successfully prosecuted.
The prosecution was lodged against DOCS, the employer at the time. Disability Services is now a separate Department.
