Union calls for peaceful resolution
By David Carey Federal Secretary (SPSF Group) - CPSU Joint National Secretary
Our union's executive, which represents more than 105,000 state public servants, has passed a resolution calling for a peaceful resolution to the Iraqi crisis.
Preamble
1. That Australian participation in a unilateral attack or war upon Iraq does not qualify as being mandated under any current treaty to which Australia is a party.
2. Australia's military obligations should always be determined by our public commitments to fulfil obligations arising from the United Nations, or other treaties, endorsed by the Australian Parliament.
3. The union notes that all peaceful means to resolve this crisis have not been exhausted under UN Security Council mandates.
4. The Union endorses the statements of the Australian Council of Trades Unions in regards to a peaceful resolution of the Iraq crisis and the support for UN processes to deal with the crisis.
5. The Union notes the expressions of deep misgiving, by other national unions and international Labour organisations to a unilateral attack upon Iraq.
RESOLUTION
Therefore the Union calls upon the Federal Government to:
1(a) Vigorously promote diplomatic and non-military means to achieve a peaceful resolution resulting in the compliance of Iraq to United Nations directives.
1(b) Recall the Australian Defence Force Personnel from participation in any force not authorised by a mandate from the United Nations Security Council.
1(c) Restate plainly that Australia and its defence force will not act against Iraq unless by specific mandate from the United Nations and the majority support from the Australian Parliament
And
2. The Union pledges itself to work with and to be a party with other Australian and International Labour organisations, to achieve these objectives
