British probation workers strike
Probation officers have voted to strike over staff shortages and increasing workloads.
At the annual general meeting of their trade union, Napo, more than 500 members voted in favour of a one-day strike, boycotts and work-to-rule action. Just 10 voted against. The industrial action, to involve 7,700 Napo members in England and Wales, follows two years of negotiations with the Home Office on workload prioritisation. Assistant general secretary Harry Fletcher said: 'The probation service is under-valued, under-resourced and overworked. Management must realise they have a legal duty of care for staff and prioritise workloads without any further delay.' Over the last five years, the probation service's workload has increased by 30 per cent, but the number of trained staff has remained static, he said.
