TV advertises November 30 rally

The ACTU has begun a television ad blitz to promote a national community protest against the Howard Government's IR laws this Thursday 30 November.

The focus of the national protest will be an historic rally at the MCG in Melbourne that will involve union & community leaders, comedians Corinne Grant and Dave Hughes and singers Jimmy Barnes and Casey Donovan.

The MCG Rally will be linked up via a satellite broadcast to meetings and major rallies across Australia including at Belmore and Tumbalong Parks in Sydney; Southbank, Brisbane; Elder Park, Adelaide; City Hall, Hobart; Manuka Oval, ACT; and Perth Oval, WA.

ACTU President Sharan Burrow said:

"This will be Australia's biggest ever simultaneous community protest with more than three hundred localities being linked up by satellite with the MCG rally.

Thursday's protest is an important opportunity for working families to send a message that they are strongly opposed to the Federal Government's unfair IR laws.

This is the start of the next stage of the union and community campaign to change the IR laws.

The meetings and rallies being held this week will highlight examples of workers who have lost their jobs unfairly as well as workers who have suffered a cut to their pay and basic work conditions from the new IR laws.

Unions are determined to wage a long campaign to build community support for fair industrial relations laws that respect the rights of workers and safeguard the jobs and lifestyles of Australian working families.

I urge everyone who is worried about the IR laws to come to the MCG or their local protest venue on Thursday. And bring your children, it's their future too," said Ms Burrow.

RALLY at Melbourne Cricket Ground

The Melbourne MCG Rally will start at 8am and continue until 10.15am (AEST).

It will be televised and broadcast live from 9am to 10am (AEST) to simultaneous rallies in Sydney, Canberra, Adelaide, Hobart and community meetings in regional centres in those states. Delayed broadcasts of the MCG rally will occur in other localities.

Entry to the MCG is free. Gates are open from 7am. MCG catering outlets will be open.
