PSI strongly condemns Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama's actions in dismissing, through force, the legitimately elected government of Fiji.
PSI supports the position of the PSI affiliates, the Fiji Trade Union movement, the Fiji NGOs, the Council of Churches, the Great Council of Chiefs and the wider community for the call to allow the elected government of Fiji to continue to govern.
"This action by the military will only worsen the situation of the poor in Fiji creating job losses and further hardship for the people of Fiji. PSI is committed to support and liaise with our affiliates in Fiji and will continue to monitor this situation closely. PSI urges the military to return to the barracks, to respect the rule of law and fully support the democratically elected government of Fiji", said Hans Engelberts, General Secretary of PSI.
Public Services International (PSI) is a global trade union federation that represents 20 million women and men working in the public services around the world. It has some 600 affiliated unions, including the CPSU-SPSF, in more than 150 countries. PSI is an autonomous body, which works in association with federations covering other sectors of the workforce and with the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU). PSI is an officially recognised non-governmental organisation for the public sector within the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and has consultative status with ECOSOC and observer status with other UN bodies such as UNCTAD and UNESCO.
