ACTU president congratulates Combet

ACTU President Sharan Burrow today congratulated Greg Combet on winning Labor Party pre-selection for the New South Wales federal parliamentary seat of Charlton in the Hunter Valley region of NSW.

The Labor Party today finalised the pre-selection for the seat following the closure of nominations yesterday.

ACTU President Sharan Burrow said:

"If elected, Greg Combet will make an excellent representative of working Australians in federal parliament and has the union movement's strong support for his decision to seek a parliamentary seat for the Labor Party.

I have no doubt that Greg will now start to work hard to attract support among the local community and if he is elected, would be a dedicated local member for the people of Charlton.

At the same time, if Greg is successful, working families would gain a fearless and passionate advocate in Federal Parliament.

Over the fourteen years he has spent at the ACTU Greg Combet has successfully led campaigns to protect the jobs and rights of workers on the Australian waterfront, to safeguard the entitlements of 16,000 workers left high and dry by the collapse of Ansett Airlines, and to achieve an historic financial settlement for the victims of James Hardie asbestos products.

I thank Greg for agreeing to stay on as ACTU Secretary for a transition period so that we can continue our partnership of leading the ACTU and the Your Rights at Work community campaign.

If Greg is elected to Parliament one thing we can all be sure of is that he will continue to stand up and fight for working families - just as he did for the asbestos victims of James Hardie," said Ms Burrow.
