Australian workers urged to help Burma
The Australian Trade Union movement's overseas aid organization Union Aid Abroad - APHEDA has launched an appeal in the wake of the devastating cyclone that hit Burma last weekend.
Union Aid Abroad - APHEDA has worked for a long time with the people of Burma.
"This is a humanitarian disaster on an unimaginable scale and we are asking all Australians to donate through Union Aid Abroad - APHEDA. The disaster relief work is already underway by union affiliated grassroots organisations on the ground.
"Funds we receive will go directly to our Union Aid Abroad - APHEDA affiliated aid agency Norwegian People's Aid who will work to make sure the funds aid the people most in need.
"Top priorities for aid are clean water, food, shelter and medical assistance.
"The scale of the natural disaster requires an internationally co-ordinated humanitarian relief response and we urge the Burmese military regime to provide immediate access to international relief agencies," said Sharan Burrow, ACTU President
For many years Union Aid Abroad - APHEDA projects have been in support of education, training and development assistance with the refugee and migrant worker communities.
A vigil for the people of Burma will be held in Melbourne people, on Saturday 10 May at 6pm on the steps of Parliament House, (Spring St) Please bring candles.
