Public Services Day
INDISPENSABLE
UN Public Services Day June 23
By David Carey Federal Secretary (SPSF Group) - CPSU Joint National Secretary
The UN General Assembly, in its Resolution 57/277, designated 23 June as Public Service Day. The UN Public Service Day intends to celebrate the value and virtue of public service to the community; highlight the contribution of public service in the development process; recognize the work of public servants, and encourage young people to pursue careers in the public sector. Since the first Awards Ceremony in 2003, the United Nations has received an increasing number of submissions from all around the world.
United Nations Public Service Awards
Australia has been among the winners for the last three years at the United Nations Public Service Awards, which are presented at the United Nations headquarters in New York each year as part of the Public Services Day celebrations.
Indispensable in our lives
The president of the United Nations General Assembly, H.E. Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann has described sound public administrations as "indispensable" in hismessage to this years' (7th) Public Service Day Awards Ceremony.
You can read brief descriptions of the achievements of this years' winners on the UNPAN website.
PSI: Quality Public Services
Public Services International is the global peak body for Public Sector Unions. PSI is working globally with unions and communities to ensure that public services are well resourced, with skilled staff delivering services that are effective, participatory, accessible and in tune with community needs. Quality public services (QPS) are essential if the world is to meet important social objectives such as the eradication of poverty and hunger.
All about you
The progress being achieved in Public Services is, of course, being achieved by you: the generally un-sung heroes working hard in the public sector.
So please take a moment today to reflect on the difference you make to your community. For a safe and equitable society you are indispensable.
