Higher EducationUnion calls for higher ed funding boostBy David Carey The federal union which covers support and general staff of higher educational institutions throughout the country has called on the Federal Government to immediately increase funding for universities. CPSU Joint National Secretary David Carey said the Productivity Commission Report into Higher Education showed that the Federal Government had a 'biased' funding approach toward wealthier institutions. "Australia is now only the lucky country if you can afford it," said Mr Carey. "Not only do students and their families have less access to public education but workers at these institutions have an increased workload and are under greater stress," he said.International comparisons show that students at Australian universities are now paying more for their education than the United States, Canada and Sweden. The report also states that students and their families are carrying more of the burden of fees for their education. Public funding of universities as a proportion of GDP has declined from 1.7 per cent in 1995 to 1.5 per cent in 1999. This has happened at a time when student numbers have grown and staff levels have declined.
