Vale Val Buswell

By Sue Hammond
CPSU-SPSF Women's Industrial Officer

Long time equal pay activist Val Buswell died earlier this week. Val worked here entire life for working women's rights and equal pay. She first intervened in Equal Pay cases in 1950. Even in her later years she organized and encouraged women to fight to improve working conditions. In 1999 she organized the Business Women's Professional Association to reject the Reith More Jobs Better Pay Bill.

Val appeared in the Senate Inquiry and made the unforgettable statement:

Ì used to say that I wished pay equity would come in before Jean Arnot, one of our long-time, hardworking members died, and also Edna Ryan from WEL died. However, that did not happen. So now I hope it will be achieved before I die. However, if this sort of legislation goes through, my two colleagues here will be saying in 30 years or 40 years time, Ì hope it happens before I die'

Sadly these words are still relevant in todays industrial environment.

Farewell sister.

Suzanne Hammond
