On Fairness by Sally McManus

  • 8 February 2019

ACTU Secretary Sally McManus’s new book On Fairness outlines the way in which Australia has lost its way and is no longer living up to its promise as the land of the fair go.  Sally tackles the subject of fairness in Australia and what we need to do to ensure that future generations have all the opportunities they should expect. She looks at why we find ourselves surrounded by growing inequality - stagnant wage growth, gender pay inequity, the gig economy, corruption, corporate tax cuts and outrageous executives bonuses.

Sally argues that the fight for basic rights is as urgent as ever and under threat in new ways. She shows that the legacy of those who have stood up to unjust laws to win the rights working people should be a lesson for those in the movement today.

Sally points out the ruse of “trickle down economics” and shows that from Scott Morrison’s corruption of the phrase “a fair go” through to Paul Keating’s acknowledgement of the “liberal economic...dead end”, governments have failed to uphold the promise of a fair go for all Australian workers.

Sally also outlines the inequality that we all know and experience every day, and connects this to the outrageous displays of corporate greed and irresponsibility at the Banking Royal Commission.

On Fairness draws together the challenges facing Australia and Australians, highlighting how far we have strayed from the land of the fair go, and outlining a path back which starts with changing the rules.

It’s essential reading for anyone engaged in the struggle to change the rules and the fight for fairness in Australia.
